Fighting Back Against Dry Skin

Having dry skin can be disconcerting. Nobody wants to have dry, scaly skin. It is not pleasant to look at and neither is its texture appealing. However, most people experience dry skin at some point in their lives. The causes of dry skin are many and varied. It is usually not a great cause for concern, and with the right care, the dryness can clear away on its own. Nevertheless, there are some instances where dry skin warrants medical attention. Read on to find out when dry skin becomes ultra-dry skin.

What Causes Dry Skin?
Naturally, the skin is kept supple and soft by oils secreted by oil glands found in the inner layers of the skin. But constant exposure of the skin to harsh conditions can cause it to become unbelievably dry.

One common cause of dry skin is the use of harsh products on the skin. It doesn’t matter whether the product in question is a soap or oil, so long as it contains some harsh chemical or other, it is going to adversely affect your skin. Have you ever noticed how working with a bleaching agent with unprotected hands causes them to dry up? And few products contain ingredients that are half as harsh as those used in the manufacture of bleach. The same is true for beauty products or soaps that contain harsh chemicals: they will suck the moisture out of your skin.

Dry skin can also be caused by exposure of the skin to harsh weather conditions. Expose your skin to too much heat and it will lose moisture. Expose it to cold, heavy wind and the wind will rid it of important moisture too. Sometimes, even exposure to scalding hot water for long hours will make your skin dry. Swimming for long will also rob your skin of the precious oils that keep it soft. Wearing abrasive clothes will also not do your skin any good, as it is also a leading cause of dry skin.

Sometimes, skin can dry up due to factors that are beyond your control, such as medical conditions. Some of them include hormonal imbalances, diabetes, underactive thyroids, genetics and malnutrition.

When should you seek medical attention?
The rule to follow before you seek medical attention is that you should try using ordinary moisturizers for up to two weeks. You should also try using some potent skin care products, especially LT Organics Skin Care Products. Some of their best products include Triple Virgin Organic Argan Oil, Nourishing Hand Cream and Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter. These have been known to help restore moisture to dry skin within a short period of time.

If after trying all skin care products your skin still remains inexplicably dry, it is time to seek medical help. Or perhaps your skin has dried up so badly that the cracks have started bleeding or oozing blood. Set up an appointment with your doctor or dermatologist immediately. They will be able to determine the underlying cause of your dry skin and devise a therapy that will help heal your skin. They could give you antihistamines to help reduce itching or recommend that you use creams such as cortisone to reduce swelling. They will also treat the real cause of the dry skin and thus put a permanent stop to it.
